A forerunner to this drag strip was Antelope Valley Raceway (see above). The Palmdale Raceway drag strip, located six miles east of Palmdale, held its first race in October 1964. Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Vernalis (site) Commissioned 8 June 1943, NAAS Vernalis was constructed to support two multi-engine patrol squadrons. It was decided in 1944 to swap missions with nearby.
